HALLOWEEN - FLYING DEMONS

Hi All,
Getting my yard ready for Halloween. I got this idea from the Internet. I wanted to make some little "flying demons" from those $1 Store skeletons. I've seen photos of something like this people have made with feather wings, but I wanted to make some bat wings.

I ended up making 5 of them in an afternoon. The wings were easy -- just some floral wire, tissue paper, glue, and some paint. I burnt the edges with a candle flame. They are hot-glued to the spine and shoulders.

And, I gave them a little tail with some twine. The horns are made from shaping Hot-Glue with my wet fingers. A little dot of red glitter glue for the eyes, and they're ready to fly!

My plan is to hang them around my front door.

I'll post some more photos of my Halloween decorations in my next post.

These are so cool. I'd love to put these in my Halloween buffet table. Too cute and really creepy. Love them.

Can you give a little more detail on your process? Like, what were the paints that you used and, did you use any kind of a glaze? Did you pain the whole skeleton or just the tissue paper wings? I bought myself a semi-large skeleton and am looking to make it into one of these fellows. If you could provide maybe a list of the things you used to make them, that would be very helpful. :o)

Hi Kelly,
I didn't do much -- just painted the skellies with some brown & black acrylic paint (same for wings) I did coat the whole thing with some gloss medium, so the paint wouldn't peel off. I used a heat gun and hot glue to pose the skellies to make them look like they're flying. The wings are made with 3 lengths of floral wire, tied together. At the top of the wing (the "thumb") I bent the 3 wires down to make the "fingers". I laid out the wire frame on tissue paper and gave it a coat of white glue (use wax paper or plastic wrap on your work surface, or you'll glue the wings to your table!)After it dried, I trimmed the tissue paper to size, leaving a 1/4 inch at the top edge. I flipped it over, glued the tissue edge around the wire, and gave it another coat of glue. If you have any more questions, e-mail me.

These are just wonderful! Are the wings connected in one continuous piece to the back of the skellies, or are they two pieces glued separately? Can't wait to try my hand at them. :)

Hi Deborah,
The wings are done in one piece. They come to a point and glue to the spine, ending at the tail bone. I think I glued the tails on first, so the wing would cover the top of the twine.

Amazing work! I have a question about the burned edges of the wings: How did you accomplish this without catching the whole thing aflame? I tried to singe the edges of a coffee filter the other day and the whole thing went up in a hurry. Did you singe it after the glue?

Thanks Danielle. Yes, glue on wings first, then singe edges.

Nice work Arlely. I love all things Halloween. Reminds me of old horror movies. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic! I have been making these creatures for some time but having been toying with the tissue paper idea. You've painted them great. Gonna try this tomorrow, thanks for sharing!

These kind of remind me of those clay and wire creations in the old B rated horror movies and Evil Dead(the original trilogy)
